I don't normally post links but...
This story is seriously cool!!!

The mystery: Indiana Jones' Diary arrives in the University of Chicago's Mail Box

The solution: And it wasn't actually because of some kind of publicity stunt

Indeed!

My favourite bit:

If you’re a member of the University community and this belongs to you or you’ve gotten one like it before

Because obviously if you receive one elaborate package addressed to a fictional character you assume there must be others out there...

Mind you, my choice of userpic has just reminded me that the bank now situated at 221b Baker Street regularly gets post addressed to Sherlock Holmes, often with requests to solve mysteries. Even though anyone who's read the canon knows that's stupid, as Holmes retired to Sussex and became a bee-keeper before World War I.

I've received a book from almost a fictional character in my work mail box before, so perhaps it happens more often than we suppose.

I read that post of yours at the time, although I'd forgotten about it. Did you ever discover what it was about?

I have never received a package from a fictional character. I feel deeply disappointed and unwanted now (especially as I am wondering what has happened to two real packages that have mysteriously failed to arrive, although strictly speaking one of them appears to have mysteriously failed to dispatch).

I have never received a package from a fictional character.

Me neither*.

I feel deeply disappointed and unwanted now

Me too!

*Although I wonder if Santa Claus counts ...

If anyone ever gives G a copy of the Father Christmas Letters I am so totally busted...

Hmm ... I see blackmail opportunities ...
louisedennislouisedennis on December 18th, 2012 07:35 pm (UTC)
No I didn't. A quick google turns up a lot more pages about it these days, but no one seems to have an answer.

Perhaps your real packages were cancelled out by the fictional anti-packages?
daniel_saunders: Kafkadaniel_saunders on December 18th, 2012 08:11 pm (UTC)
Well, it occurs to me that one of the packages I'm waiting for contains a book I've actually contributed to (Outside In: 160 New Perspectives on 160 Classic Doctor Who Stories by 160 Writers). And I share my name with a fictional character (Daniel 'Danny' Saunders in The Chosen and The Promise by Chaim Potok). So maybe I have a fictional avatar sending myself books written by one of us/me? Or not.

What fun!

The most interesting thing I ever got in my pigeonhole, way back in undergraduate days, was a letter actually addressed to my father, who'd studied at the same college many years earlier.

That's actually pretty cool!
