Fossil Friday: Lepidodendron Trunk
Twitter has alerted me to the fact that fossil Friday is a thing. I'm only tangentially interested in fossils, via B. and primeval fandom, however I have nevertheless grabbed the nearest dinosaur book (DK Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Life) and turned to the first page where I was greeted by a picture of a Lepidodendron fossil.

Not this picture admittedly which is from Edgar L Owen.com

Lepidodendrons were club mosses (resembling palm trees) that grew up to 50m tall and lived in the Carboniferous. So now you know.

I know it's a typo, but the vision of a sort of My Little Pony Carboniferous Era filled with delightful hugging plants and insects, probably in rainbow shades will stay with me for some time :-D

Hugs, plants and insects might make a good fanfic prompt though...

Cool! :-)

Fossil Friday is definitely a thing, as I discovered from tumblr. I follow a couple of geology/earth science blogs, and by far the best one is earthstory.tumblr.com which covers all sorts of natural history, climate, weather, geophysics, geochemistry, and misc random stuff as well as geology and palaeontology. Worth a look if you're even vaguely interested in that kind of thing.

I think I mostly see Phil Manning's tweets on it, but I thought that what with various reference books and odd stuff B turns up with from time to time, something ought to be manageable.

I usually spot fossil Friday posts on Saturday when it is a little late to join in *g* But it's quite cool. I love good tree fossils! Or enormous moss fossil. :)

I'm going to try posting stuff on fossil Friday regularly, though I'm not sure how well it will go since I'm not really a fossil person, still it seems pretty fun!
