Yes, The Green Death. I'm not sure if it is the sort of thing a UNIT agent would pack to Llanfairfach, but UNIT is a singular organization. Not to be worn up on slag heaps, even with the professor.

It's presence does rather imply she was anticipating the opportunity to go to a party or on a date, though, I suppose, given her spying background it's possible she always travels with a trunk full of "disguises".

To be fair, it's pretty clear in the story that she has a massive crush on Professor Jones before she even thinks of going to Wales, so it's possible she packed it deliberately. But Jo's fashion sense in general is, er, unique.

Jo is not alone in having a unique fashion sense. Many classic Who companions had some very questionable wardrobe choices (not in terms of practicality though female companions are often put in distinctly impractical clothing) which make you wonder who on Earth thought they looked good in those clothes.

True, but I think Jo is the most extreme. Unless you count all those eighties companions who insist on wearing the same clothes all the time.

But they were often wearing clothes from a Gallifreyan wardrobe, rather than an Earth one.

By and large Jo and Sarah do not have this excuse, and even Tegan's most hideous outfit (the lacey white boob tube thing) is clearly her own.

But also, given Romana generally looked splendid (if somewhat unlikely), I don't think the Gallifreyan wardrobe can be the culprit.

I had forgotten that thing of Tegan's. And yes, I think you are right in your conclusion.

Clearly her own and looks nothing like anyone else is wearing on the streets of Amsterdam...
wellinghallwellinghall on October 22nd, 2016 03:18 pm (UTC)
Um yes, that is rather unfortunate, isn't it.
louisedennis: Doctor Wholouisedennis on October 22nd, 2016 05:24 pm (UTC)
I did a cursory google to see if I could find a picture of it from a more flattering angle, but failed to do so.
wellinghallwellinghall on October 22nd, 2016 05:25 pm (UTC)
The angle is clearly half the problem; unfortunately, the dress itself is the other half.
louisedennis: Doctor Wholouisedennis on October 22nd, 2016 05:26 pm (UTC)
It certainly doesn't look like an easy dress to carry off.
wellinghallwellinghall on October 22nd, 2016 05:31 pm (UTC)
I know I couldn't do it.
bunnbunn on October 22nd, 2016 04:02 pm (UTC)
OMG. That is truly awful. To be fair, she does look pretty horrified at being inside it.
louisedennis: Doctor Wholouisedennis on October 22nd, 2016 05:25 pm (UTC)
I did wonder whether, if she were standing straighter it might look more flattering, but I have my doubts it looks like the sort of dress that makes you look like you are a bundle, not matter what you do.

The Green Death is the episode which meant I was not allowed to watch Dr Who for several years because it scared me so much. I still have a thing about big insects on film.

My first memories of Doctor Who are from the following year, so I was in my teens before I saw any of this run of stories, and then only one's that came out on video - a slow process initially.
