Hadrian's Wall: Miscellaneous Photos
These were left over from my Hadrian's Wall posts in the summer. I'm not quite back on top of things, but I'm hoping to resume regular(ish) blog posting outside the weekends soon.

Official start of the walk

Photos from the first and last day where there was less archeology.

The very start of our walk: the eastern end of the cycleway in Newcastle

A fortified house towards the western end of the walk. The guidebook had details but it is not to hand. Not medieval I think.

The Solway Firth

Our final B&B - probably my favourite, not as pretty or elaborate as some, but one which catered fairly and squarely for walkers (no need to remove muddy boots on entrance, for instance). Note that those flowers are all in discarded wall-walker's boots. B. almost left his behind as a donation, but decided against it.

The end of the walk.

The owner of this sign would set up the distance to your home and take a photograph of you. He was not averse to the odd monetary donation. According to the owner of our B&B the council had tried to close him down, claiming he needed planning permission to erect a signpost. As a results this was, apparently, a moveable sign post that he took home with him every night.

He asked us if there was anyone following us. I think we looked a bit blank though we did point out we'd walked an awfully long way that last day and hadn't obviously overtaken anyone.

Indeed! Though frankly I think it was a little mean of the council to object to his entrepreneurial spirit.

Indeed! Apparently he could be found in the local pub of an evening, though he wasn't conspicuously there when we dropped in for a drink.
